With this exhibition, Malte Hein embarks on a search for insights into his family history and the world that created it.
More than 35 hours of audio material from conversations with the war, pre-war and post-war generation of his relatives, as well as diary entries, letters and notes served as a starting point for questions, themes and interpretations.
Time, landscape, family.
Individual figures in an often barren environment allow themes such as loneliness, restlessness or helplessness to emerge without explicitly depicting them.
The result of this journey, a group of oil paintings, detach these themes from individual experiences and place them in a broader context. The works question the connection to our family past and reflect on our frequent failure to learn the necessary lessons from these life stories.
